Our clients — a lovely family of four — live in a charming period home nestled in the heart of Bedford Park, Chiswick. Often celebrated as London’s first garden suburb, Bedford Park is known for its distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture, tree-lined streets, and strong sense of community. This sought-after West London enclave offers a rare blend of historic character and village atmosphere, making it an ideal setting for a beautifully considered family home. The design brief focused on reimagining the ground floor layout, which includes a formal living room, welcoming entrance hallway, downstairs cloakroom, spacious open-plan kitchen, utility room, and a relaxed sitting area overlooking their recently landscaped garden — a space with immense potential for indoor-outdoor living.

Having relocated while raising two young children, the family brought with them a collection of furniture accumulated from previous homes around the world. While each piece held meaning, the overall aesthetic didn’t quite align with the proportions or architectural language of their new home in the UK. With the demands of early family life beginning to ease, they felt ready to invest in a cohesive and elegant interior — one that not only reflected their love of colour and layered design, but also subtly honoured their Indian cultural roots through thoughtful materiality, textures, and craftsmanship.

Creative Process

For this Bedford Park home, the mood boards served as a gentle guide for shaping a design that honoured both the period architecture and the personal story of the family. Our client, an artist with a real love of colour and texture, was keen to create a home that reflected her creative spirit and cultural roots in a subtle, elegant way.

We drew inspiration from the British Colonial style, incorporating deep woods, crisp linens, and a colour palette of soft peach, green, and blue — all grounded by the natural beauty of the blossom tree visible from the sitting room window. Indian silks and woven embroideries were introduced with care, adding richness and craftsmanship without overpowering the architectural character of the home. We worked closely with our clients reviewing their inspiration and weaving their ideas into the mood boards.

It was important that the final design felt thoughtful and intentional, rather than overly curated, and that it supported family life while still feeling creative, personal, and quietly expressive of the client's background and passions.

Material Selection

At Ixia London, we pride ourselves on thoughtful material sourcing — not only selecting finishes that align beautifully with the design concept, but also introducing our clients to exceptional suppliers they may not have come across before. This project was no exception, and materiality played a central role in bringing our "British Colonial meets colour and craft" concept to life.

Rugs were especially important in this home. Each space required something different — a tactile layer that would ground the room, enhance its character, and work in harmony with both the architecture and the furnishings. We began by reviewing several of our favourite suppliers:

The Rug Company – known for its collaborations with leading designers and fashion houses, offering bold, statement rugs with a luxurious finish.

Jennifer Manners – a B Corp-certified studio celebrated for its ethical sourcing and sophisticated, hand-knotted designs, including her innovative /Eco Fibres/ collection.

Homes Bespoke Rugs – specialists in custom designs, offering a wide range of textures and materials for truly personalised pieces.

A Rum Fellow – a London-based design studio creating vibrant, handcrafted rugs and textiles that celebrate global artisanal techniques with a bold, contemporary edge.

Riviere Rugs – a London-based maker of hand-knotted rugs, whose understated, beautifully detailed patterns and superior craftsmanship perfectly suited the tone of the project.

After careful review and sampling, our client ultimately selected Riviere Rugs for their ability to deliver custom pieces with subtle elegance and a timeless, artisanal feel. Their made-to-order approach gave us the flexibility to develop colourways that worked seamlessly with the palette throughout the house, including soft blue tones, earthy neutrals, and deeper accents drawn from nature and heritage textiles.

For the walls, texture and tone were key. We selected a mix of finishes that brought depth and quiet luxury to each room. These included a beautifully textured grasscloth from Phillip Jeffries, which added warmth and dimension, and an incredibly refined wallcovering from Pierre Frey, chosen for its rich materiality and soft sheen — a perfect complement to the more formal elements of the design.

Every material was selected with care, balancing aesthetics with practicality, and always in dialogue with the overall concept. The result is a home that feels richly layered, quietly luxurious, and completely personal.

Furniture and Decor

For this project, furniture and décor selection was a joyful and highly collaborative process — one that balanced style, comfort, and long-term function for a busy family home. Every piece needed to work hard in its space, while also contributing to the layered, elegant aesthetic we were building throughout the house.

We had a particularly rewarding experience working with our long-standing partners at Larkbury (formerly The Sofa & Chair Company). Based just outside London in Acton, Larkbury are known for their made-to-order furniture, combining classic forms with modern detailing. Several visits to their showroom and factory allowed us — and the client — to explore scale, comfort, and upholstery in person. Their team guided us expertly through fabric options, bespoke sizing, and finishing details, helping us tailor each piece precisely to the space.

Additional furniture, such as the beautiful dining table was sourced from Adventures in Furniture

whose commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship always aligns beautifully with our values. With showrooms in Chiswick, Islington and Battersea, their knowledgeable team were incredibly helpful in refining choices that felt both design-led and practical for family living.

We also turned to BoConcept for the dining chairs — their sleek, modern designs provided the perfect contrast to the more traditional materials elsewhere in the home. Their wide selection of finishes and ergonomic design made them a smart, stylish choice for the open-plan kitchen-dining space.

Throughout the process, our priority was to ensure each piece served a purpose, it was family friendly, it enhanced the character of the home, and echoed the overarching concept of British elegance with global touches. The final result is a collection of furnishings that feel cohesive, personal, and entirely at ease within the architecture of the house.

Lighting Design

Lighting played a central role in shaping the atmosphere of this home — not simply as a functional layer, but as a key part of the design narrative. We approached it with care, ensuring each room felt warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully lit from morning through to evening.

The kitchen and dining areas, which form the heart of the home, were given particular attention. We sourced all the lighting for this space from the brilliant team at Hand & Eye Studio — known for their sculptural forms, artisanal finishes, and beautifully crafted ceramic pieces.

Over the dining table, we installed the A-Beam — a striking linear pendant in warm terracotta. Its clean lines and soft, downward glow created a strong visual anchor for the dining space. This was complemented by a pair of Gooseberry wall lights in the same red terracotta finish — small but impactful, these added gentle pools of light and a tactile layer to the walls.

Above the kitchen island, we chose three Rigatoni pendants — a beautifully proportioned light with an earthy terracotta exterior and glazed blue interior. These brought a warm, slightly playful energy to the space, reflecting the peach and blue tones found throughout the home’s palette.

In the formal living room, the lighting took on a more refined tone in keeping with the space’s materials and purpose. From Porta Romana, we selected the Large Holden Ceiling Light, whose hand-textured gesso finish and antique brass detailing felt perfectly suited to the British Colonial theme. Elegant yet quietly impactful, it offered both sculptural interest and soft illumination from above.

This was paired with the Holden Floor Lamp, also from Porta Romana, topped with a striking green shade — a subtle nod to the colour accents running throughout the room, and a beautiful complement to the deep woods and rich textiles. We finished the scheme with classic picture lights from Pooky, used to highlight artwork and add another warm, focused layer of light to the room.

Across the entire home, our approach to lighting was to layer function with mood — using a thoughtful mix of ceiling, wall, and floor lights to ensure each space could adapt to different times of day, seasons, and moments of family life. The result is an interior that not only looks beautiful but feels beautifully lit — atmospheric, calm, and entirely considered.

The brief: take a small, oddly shaped room and transform it from a baby’s nursery to a beautiful, comfortable and functional guest space. Not only did Kirsty meet the brief, but she far surpassed our expectations. She cleverly designed a wall of bespoke cabinetry around a king size bed that took into account storage space for suitcases, personal items, nooks for reading lights and charging points - all while not making guests feel as though they are sleeping in a cave. It was a challenging project given the space limitations. In addition to creating an exceptionally functional space, Kirsty gave incredible attention to design details. From hidden storage space for sweets (for midnight feasts!), to door pulls, to intricate cabinet detailing, Kirsty thought of it all. Our guests feel as though they are staying in a very special place. The best part of the project - working with Kirsty! She is absolutely wonderful and we cannot recommend her enough.
