Chiswick – Pleydell avenue

The brief: take a small, oddly shaped room and transform it from a baby’s nursery to a beautiful, comfortable and functional guest space.

With such a fun brief, we enjoyed reviewing inspiration from hotel rooms and ski chalets, this design aimed to accentuate the uniquely British architecture of this period house. My clients are America and loved the idea of creating a "London" inspired bedroom for their guests to enjoy when visiting.

The room is oddly shaped, with a limiting window and one diagonal wall. We drew up several layouts before deciding on "over bed" joinery to maximise floor space. By space planning in CAD we were able to see the rooms limitations clearly in black and white.

This substantial Victorian house, with tall ceilings and period features lent itself beautifully to a full submersion of wallpaper and colours from www.houseofhackney.com

Holly and I took a morning to visit the restored Victorian Church and now home/showroom of House of Hackney, a British Company who focus on craftsmanship and heritage, rooted in nature, with botanicals, florals and plants as the focus for their beautiful wallpapers and fabrics.

Together, we chose a wallpaper, with the idea of drenching the room in its pattern. The paint colours and blind fabrics were chosen from their complimentary ranges. Light pinks, subtle lilac, gentle greens and delicate browns forms the basis of the wallpaper https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/flora-fantasia-wallpaper-ecru

We knew we needed a statement bed to accompany this riot of wallpaper and the wavy headboard, in teal velvet from https://www.sweetpeaandwillow.com/beds-bedroom/beds worked perfectly.

My client Holly and her husband Mike were keen to provide super comfortable guest lighting in this bedroom. We paid special attention, creating two bedside niches, with reading lights on goose necks, allowing the guest to pull out the powerful reading light to just the right spot. We also incorporated USB-C power sockets by the bed for phone charging.

Working with https://www.instagram.com/fullertonjoineryco/?hl=en on this project, our 7th project together, could not have been more enjoyable. James is a pleasure to work with, accurate, timely and comes in on budget every time.

Our client's testimonial: “The brief: take a small, oddly shaped room and transform it from a baby’s nursery to a beautiful, comfortable and functional guest space. Not only did Kirsty meet the brief, but she far surpassed our expectations. She cleverly designed a wall of bespoke cabinetry around a king size bed that took into account storage space for suitcases, personal items, nooks for reading lights and charging points - all while not making guests feel as though they are sleeping in a cave. It was a challenging project given the space limitations. In addition to creating an exceptionally functional space, Kirsty gave incredible attention to design details. From hidden storage space for sweets (for midnight feasts!), to door pulls, to intricate cabinet detailing, Kirsty thought of it all. Our guests feel as though they are staying in a very special place. The best part of the project - working with Kirsty! She is absolutely wonderful, and we cannot recommend her enough.” - Holly⁣
