Chiswick Rusthall Avenue

A once-derelict family home in the heart of Chiswick was completely transformed to suit modern family living. The redesign features an open-plan ground floor, six bedrooms, and six bathrooms spread across the basement, first, and second floors. With a focus on natural materials, earthy tones, and adaptable spaces, the home was thoughtfully designed to accommodate a growing family.

Project Description

Click on the title below to view more about the project.

Much of the inspiration for the home came from the garden, with spring colours reflected in the striking artwork by Casey More that takes pride of place in the central living room. At the heart of the design is an intricate spiral staircase, crafted from solid European oak and softened with a series of curves. Spanning four floors, the staircase is both a focal point and a masterpiece, envisioned by architect Simon Gill

At the heart of the home is the kitchen, enclosed by a curved wall partially constructed from slats of the same European oak used in the striking staircase, creating a sense of continuity. The dark, glossy ceiling lends the kitchen a warm, cosy feel despite its open-plan design. To the rear, floor-to-ceiling glass floods the space with natural light, complemented by bright walls and ceilings for an airy, uplifting atmosphere.

The layout was designed to be highly adaptable, providing communal areas for family gatherings and socialising, alongside smaller, quieter spaces for individual use. Rusthall Avenue is home to a family of five—two sisters and their older brother—all needing their own personal spaces.

An art room, tucked discreetly off the main living room, offers a space for homework or creative projects. Positioned near the kitchen, it allows the children to work independently while staying close to an adult cooking nearby.

The basement level features a spacious gym with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, glass doors to maximise natural light, and a top-notch sound system. Below that, a fully soundproofed cinema room was built, complete with state-of-the-art technology for an authentic cinematic experience.

All materials were anchored in the same palette, earthy tones, plenty of greens and pink. Natural stone, Oak, against bronze or dark gold metallics. Plenty of mirrors either antiqued or with a soft pink tone.

I have a deep love for colour, so it was a challenge—but a rewarding one—to work within a relatively restrained palette. On the ground floor, the predominantly green scheme branches out with the introduction of a rich dark blue, highlighted by the Paint and Paper Library wallpaper that envelops the sitting room, even extending over the windowsills for a dramatic effect.

Upstairs, the children’s rooms allowed for a little more playfulness, with the palette expanding to include mustard yellow and deep plimsoll blue, adding warmth and individuality to their personal spaces.

The dining table, a striking piece purchased from The Conran Shop over 18 years ago, remains a true statement. This wooden table, entirely clad in sheet metal, commands attention at the heart of the space. It’s paired with timeless Wishbone dining chairs by Hans Wegner, creating a perfect balance of classic and bold design.

When briefing architect Simon Gill, we requested curves to feature in every room—a theme carried through the kitchen walls, window frames, door tops, and the graceful return of the staircase. Continuing this motif, our sofa choice was the Julep by Jonas Wagell for Tacchini
Purchased from the lovely Carla
Upholstered in luxurious dark olive-green velvet, its soft, enveloping form is both simple and grand, with a distinctly feminine elegance. A true statement piece!

Most of the lighting in the project was purchased from the talented duo Ralph & Dixie

As every interior designer knows, no design can come to life without the support of a skilled and dedicated team. This project, which took 15 months from breaking ground to final installation, was no exception.

Our main contractor, Noble Structures, worked seamlessly alongside 4mark to bring the vision to reality. They were supported by an incredible team of joiners, curtain makers, and specialist contractors, all of whom we highly recommend for their expertise and attention to detail.

At Ixia London, project management is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that great design can only be realised through meticulous coordination and collaboration. By partnering with trusted professionals and maintaining clear, timely communication at every stage, we ensure that each project runs smoothly and achieves the best possible results.

Since its completion, Rusthall Avenue has garnered significant recognition, making the cover of *The Times* property section—a true testament to its design. The house has also become a sought-after location for high-profile shoots, featuring campaigns for brands such as Lululemon, Office, ASOS, ITV, and Unilever. As they say, the proof is in the pudding!

Let us craft your vision into reality with bespoke designs that exude luxury and effortless functionality.

The brief: take a small, oddly shaped room and transform it from a baby’s nursery to a beautiful, comfortable and functional guest space. Not only did Kirsty meet the brief, but she far surpassed our expectations. She cleverly designed a wall of bespoke cabinetry around a king size bed that took into account storage space for suitcases, personal items, nooks for reading lights and charging points - all while not making guests feel as though they are sleeping in a cave. It was a challenging project given the space limitations. In addition to creating an exceptionally functional space, Kirsty gave incredible attention to design details. From hidden storage space for sweets (for midnight feasts!), to door pulls, to intricate cabinet detailing, Kirsty thought of it all. Our guests feel as though they are staying in a very special place. The best part of the project - working with Kirsty! She is absolutely wonderful and we cannot recommend her enough.

Kirsty is just super. She's very friendly, creative, practical and professional. She thinks outside the box about design and budget and really cares about working as a team with her clients to deliver them the results they want. Thanks to Kirsty, I have a beautiful and functional kitchen bathroom - little decisions like encouraging me to tile behind the toilet rather than wallpaper (because it is a high traffic room and used by young boys!) - will make cleaning easier, and less chance to ruin the expensive wallpaper elsewhere! Thank you! I've recommended Kirsty to my friends already.

We had the great pleasure of working with IXIA London on our recent home renovation and I can honestly say it was such a positive experience from start to finish. Kirsty and her extended team not only listened carefully to our vision, but brought it to reality after we had been mulling over ideas for far too long. Kirsty’s attention to detail, unfaltering energy and open mindset, drove the process forward at a pace that we needed to make it all happen! She can multi-task like the best of them and does an amazing job of shielding the client from all the numerous challenges that comes from procurement and managing trades! She fully respected and complemented our style preferences and we can’t underestimate how she also managed to balance out aesthetics with practicality within all her recommendations, not an easy combo to find. What we appreciated most, was her ability to manage the entire project seamlessly. She has a highly effective way of liaising with contractors and suppliers and maintains open communication throughout the process. From quality issues with procured items, to delays with deliveries (always the case!), we can’t think of anyone who can manage that more successfully and with such confidence. Our home now feels like a true reflection of who we are, but with the carefully thought through aesthetic finesse of IXIA London.

Kirsty and I have collaborated on a number of projects. With Kirsty providing exceptional designs and myself creating the bespoke carpentry pieces. From bespoke bars to full feature shelving walls, Kirsty’s creativity, attention to detail and exceptional colour palette really brought Marshall Bespoke Furniture to life and provided the finishing touches to the customers homes. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Kirsty again; or recommend her to anyone looking for an Interior Designer. Catriona Marshall (on behalf of Gavin Marshall) Marshall Bespoke Furniture

Highly recommend Kirsty's interior design service. She is professional, friendly, responsive, flexible, and incredibly passionate about what she does. She created mood boards based on our feedback and preferences, and sourced over 100 items for our bedroom and en-suite bathroom which were clearly presented in an Excel spreadsheet. Due to her amazing trade discounts, her interior design service really does pay for itself!! Her positive 'can-do' attitude is amazing, and she is truly client-led in the way that she works and can take the lead on your project to whatever extent works best for you. You won't regret working with Kirsty!

There are designers who bring wonderful creative ideas, there are project managers who get work done to time, quality and budget, there are lovely people who build their client’s confidence with empathy and sensitivity - but people who can do all three are rare indeed. Kirsty demonstrated all these qualities and many more (fair pricing, attention to detail, great colleagues) whilst helping me transform some rather tired rooms into a bright stylish home, full of light and colour. I am delighted to recommend Kirsty and Ixia - both the outcome and the process were an absolute pleasure.
